ASCAPE - Artificial intelligence Supporting CAncer Patients across Europe

Abstract

The latest cancer statistics highlight encouraging advances in decreasing cancer-related mortality. However, given that one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and due to the growing and ageing population, the absolute number of people living with cancer is set to keep increasing substantially in the near future. The main objective of ASCAPE is to take advantage of the recent ICT advances in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to support cancer patients` quality of life and health status. To achieve its objective, ASCAPE will create an open AI infrastructure that will enable health stakeholders (hospitals, research institutions, companies, etc.) to deploy and execute its AI algorithms locally on their private data. Any new knowledge produced by this process will be sent back to the open AI infrastructure. This way the knowledge will be shared among everyone while the medical data will still remain private. The services to be designed, piloted and deployed inside this project will include intelligent interventions for physiological and psychological support, improved patient and family counselling and guidance, early diagnosis and forecasts of ill-health, identification of disease trajectories and relapse, improved health literacy etc. ASCAPE will focus the training of the AI in two types of cancer, breast and prostate. This way, it will achieve sufficient coverage across genders as well as age groups, hence facilitating its ongoing improvements and applicability towards any type of cancer in the future.

Dr. Konstantinos Lampropoulos (male) is currently a Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras. He worked for two years as a firmware engineer in the WLAN Group of Atmel Hellas. His research interests are in the areas of identity management, privacy, and security in the future Internet. He has been involved in several EU and nationally funded research projects like CONCORDIA, SMESEC, CIPSEC, FLEXINET, PENED etc. He has published research articles in international conferences and distinguished journals and actively participates on several standardization institutes. He was a member of the Identity and access management for Networks and Services (INS) Industry Specification Group (ISG) in ETSI and the rapporteur of two work items on identity discovery. From 2012 to 2013 he actively participated in the x.discovery correspondence group of Study Group 17 in ITU with contribution to recommendation documents like the X.1255 (ex X.discovery).

Dusan_Jakovetic (male) received the Dipl. Ing. diploma degree from the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia, in August 2007, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, Instituto de Sistemas e Robotica, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal, in May 2013. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Serbia. He was a Research Fellow with the BioSense Institute, Novi Sad, Serbia, from October 2013 to September 2015, and a Postdoctoral Researcher with IST from June to September 2013. His research interests include distributed inference and distributed optimization.

Manos Athanatos M.Sc. (male) is Technical Project Manager at FORTH-ICS and a PhD Candidate at the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Cyber-Security, City, University of London. He is the acting manager for FORTH for a number of H2020 project like SMESEC , SPIDER, CyberSANE, PUZZLE and ASCAPE. Also, he is the acting Quality Assurance Manager of CyberSANE and was the acting scientific and technical manager of CIPSEC and participated in numerous FP6,FP7 and H2020 projects since 2005. Before that, he was R&D Engineer in DiSCS Lab, FORTH-ICS(`17,`16,`12,`05-`08). He received his B.S. (`05) and M.Sc. (`07) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece. His main research interests are in the areas of systems, network and system security, deception technologies, network monitoring and Cyber Ranges.

Thanos Kosmidis M.S. (male) is cofounder and Chief Executive Officer at Care Across Ltd, a digital health company focusing on cancer. He has managed the CrowdHEALTH project on behalf of the company and is also leading the company`s involvement in the ASCAPE and ONCORELIEF projects. Before Care Across Ltd, he was involved in the high-tech industry for more than 15 years, leading to the position of deputy director at a large telecommunications provider. Thanos holds an M.Eng. Computing from Imperial College London, an M.S. Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University, and has been an Advanced Study Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
